Laos Launches Plan to Safeguard Workers’ Rights
Unveiled Thursday at a formal ceremony, the project was introduced by Lao Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Welfare Phongsaysak Inthalath, who underscored its urgency and scope.
At Thursday’s launch event, Lao Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Welfare Phongsaysak Inthalath stressed that the initiative is designed to safeguard workers’ rights, curb informal labor practices, and bring national labor legislation in line with international norms.
According to a 2022 labor force survey cited by a local news agency, more than 172,000 children in Laos are currently engaged in child labor, with over 65,000 exposed to hazardous working conditions. The report warned that such practices not only endanger lives but also undermine long-term socio-economic progress.
Spanning 2025 to 2028, the project outlines a strategic overhaul of labor conditions in the country. Key objectives include eradicating workplace abuse, improving social dialogue frameworks, and amending national labor legislation to reflect international conventions by 2026.
Efforts will also focus on curbing child labor in the commercial sector, implementing nationwide awareness campaigns, and investing in training and enforcement tools. The initiative calls for active collaboration among tripartite organizations and major stakeholders, while also boosting labor inspection and monitoring systems.
The move marks one of Laos' most ambitious labor reforms to date, with the government signaling a clear intent to align its workforce policies with global norms.
